Grocery Shopping in South Africa

By Donna Kuzel

Fruit/Vegetable Stands
A common site for us here are the many ‘stands’ on the sidewalks or along the highways, where individuals will be selling the fruit and vegetables in season.  On one block in town there could be 10 or more ‘stands’.  At night they will cover their things with a large piece of plastic, wrap a rope around it and go home for the night.

Sometimes driving along the roads to the village there will be one or two individuals holding up a bag of mango’s or avocados, wanting to sell them.  It reminds me of lemonade stands in the USA, which you rarely see these days.

Avocados are in season at this time.  Brother Kuzel noticed several weeks ago that there are several avocado trees at the school where he speaks.  He found out they do not use them, so one day he took the ladder and picked 111 avocados.  Anyone want an avocado? Free!

Very interesting. I wish we had more fresh produce stands easily accessible.

That's a lot of avocadoes. Were you able to give any away? It looks like fun to buy in an open market. You must enjoy doing your shopping that way.S.N.

HI Ladies, I just had a chance to read the comments on the 'veggie' stands. On occasion Brother Kuzel will pick up a few things there but we go to the grocery store for our groceries. I must say also that the grocery store we use most of the time is better than the ones in Grand Forks. You should ask Brother Poling about our grocery store. Cherith, if you had been here you could have had as many avos as you wanted. Donna Kuzel
